I read the article posted in afibbers "HRS 2012 poster highlights: ECGs, PVCs, OSA, Debates in AF ablation, and the dangers of cryoablation" posted May 11, 2012 by John Mandrola. I have a question about the article on sleep apnea and how it can scar the heart (quoted below). I have had severe insomnia for years and am concerned whether that would also cause scarring of the heartby Windstar - AFIBBERS FORUM
FYI-Jerry Has AF ablation reached first-line status? Posted May 13, 2012 at 12:09 PM, EDT by John Mandrola Rhythm-control drugs for atrial fibrillation leave a lot to be desired. In too many cases they fail to control the rhythm, cause undesirable side effects, or worse yet, create harm. Thankfully, AF patients have other options. For the past few years, the evidence base supports theby jerrynmn1 - AFIBBERS FORUM
FYI-Jerry Turning the AF ablation world upside down--FIRM ablation Posted May 10, 2012 at 07:12 AM, EDT by John Mandrola On the atrial-fibrillation ablation front, the most striking news comes from Southern California. Dr Sanjiv Narayan has made himself famous with his paradigm-shifting work in the approach to AF ablation. To call his work "novel" understates it greatly. Aby jerrynmn1 - AFIBBERS FORUM

Jackie, Your link wasn't live so: Also: Effects of metabolic syndrome and OSA on AF ablation results If your patient has sleep apnea and metabolic syndrome, don't expect miracles from AF ablation. This is the message of a large study from Dr Natale's group. Only 35% of patients with both conditions (they often coexist) were free of AF at 34 months of follow-up. Anby GeorgeN - AFIBBERS FORUM

Buster, Actually, there is no evidence that a successful ablation is associated with post-procedure impairment of left atrial function - quite the contrary. Also, while Dr. Mandrola may have an interesting blog he is hardly one of the "heavyweights" as far as EPs dealing with afib are concerned. A MEDLINE search (of 21 million articles) turned up exactly one where Dr. Manby Hans Larsen - AFIBBERS FORUM
Here's another quote from Dr. Mandrola's blog : QuoteThe second limitation stems from the fact that the researchers could not tease out the specific technique used to ablate AF. They knew a patient had AF ablation, but they could not tell whether (or what) additional ablation was done. Additional ablation beyond the standard PVI lesion set may be an important risk factor for complicby Buster - AFIBBERS FORUM
One adverse event that may be associated with ablations in general (and overly-aggressive ablations, in particular) is that they have the potential to affect the ability of the atrium to contract (i.e., the mechanical function of the atria). Dr. John Mandrola has several posts at his blog regarding this potential down-side of ablations. Here's a quote from one of his posts : QuoteDrby Buster - AFIBBERS FORUM
