Because you are on a low carb diet, and are kind of supplementing with the Potassium ( coconut water and V8) You may actually be low in sodium. Since I started doing low carb , I've had to add about 1500 mg of sodium daily, I use green olives. When you eat very low carb, your kidneys start dumping sodium, so you may be low, and your potassium / sodium ratio may be off. Since I've adby John21 - AFIBBERS FORUM
Whoa!, Glad I finished breakfast before that first paragraph LOL. One other interesting note, I've noticed my bowel tolerance for Mag has gone up while on a low carb diet. I'm up from about 800 mg/day to 1200mg /day and haven't reached bowel tolerance. Activity level may be up a little bet also, 25 miles of hiking in the past 5 days, but not to extremes from what I'm usby John21 - AFIBBERS FORUM
Wow, Coconut flour blueberry sounds great! I'll bump of the Na and k a bit and keep you posted.by John21 - AFIBBERS FORUM
Thanks for the replies, Heart is a little calmer today, Trying 300 mg of Na (4 olives) and 500 mg of K spread out 4 times a day. Definitely at Mg bowel tolerance, may be a little over. I actually felt the episode coming on right after going to bed, I don't think it was low blood sugar. Probably a little dehydrated and low electrolytes yesterday after my long hot hike on Friday. Three days into my low carb diet, ( last Saturday) I had my first afib episode in 7 months. I thought I may be low in sodium/or potassium, so I ate a couple pickles and took about 800 mg of potassium, but it didn't resolve for 20 hours. This past week has been up and down. I was supplementing with a little sodium, but my bp went up to 140/90, so I cut that back .. I've had a couplby John21 - AFIBBERS FORUM
Thanks George for that great info, I've downloaded both of those Phinney/Volik books on my Kindle, so I'll be using them a s a learning tool. I've been on it for 2 days, probably around 80-100 grams of carbs both days and feel very good. I'm tempted to keep it here for a week or to and see how it goes. I've also found some carb sources I was previously missing, soby John21 - AFIBBERS FORUM
I read that CR ( 73 I believe) on Keto-adaptation . (A really great discussion!) and I am going to" lean" into the diet, first by eliminating simple sugars, which I've already done, then decreasing fruit and starches. I'm a little worried about the possible sodium/ potassium excretion. I am afraid to supplement with sodium. I think cutting out sodium has been very instrumeby John21 - AFIBBERS FORUM
Thanks for the great information George. That web blog from Dr. Attia is full of information. I'm going to study up and see what I can do. I'm not sure if I can get down to 50 grams /day of carbs, to keto adapt, but my initial goal is about 100 grams. My wife is a vegetarian , so that kind of makes it hard to make a huge switch. Anyway, thanks again, Johnby John21 - AFIBBERS FORUM
Hans/George, The Book "Vitamin K2 and the Calcium Paradox " by Dr Kate Rheaume-Bleue is a great resource on this issue. I've increased by K2 intake of MK7 to 270mg/day. Also eating butter from grass fed cows and organic grass fed beef . Hopefullly, that will direct all my calcium to the bones where it belongs. Johnby John21 - AFIBBERS FORUM
George, I have a few questions about the Keto- adapted diet. 1) What kind of fat do you eat? 2) ' How long does it take to get Keto- adapted ? 3) Is it an all or none thing , or if you make strides in that direction does it help change from glucose burning to fat burning? 4) Do you eat fruit? I've had success with my afib using the strategy as outlined by Jackie, almost 7 monthsby John21 - AFIBBERS FORUM
Hopefully it's over and you are feeling well in recovery. Very Best wishes!!! God Bless! John P.S. Why Am I not suprised you are giving advice from the OR table!!!!by John21 - AFIBBERS FORUM
Thanks Jackie and Shannon for all you do. I am using Waller Water for my drinking water, and I'll add a little of that powder (Emergen-c ) which has 200 mg of Potassium and i think 50 mg of sodium. Johnby John21 - AFIBBERS FORUM
I had my initial appointment with DR Schweikert at Akron General last week. I wanted to write in the forum how impressed I was with him and his staff. He spent over an hour with me, discussing my case in particular, and going over all the different options I have with ablation or continued conservative treatment. He is very open to alternative ideas, and seems to be on the cutting edge of theby John21 - AFIBBERS FORUM
Thanks Jackie, I do have one of those sheets , and a grounding pad. I've been using the sheet for a couple of years, and I don't know if its done anything, but my afib episodes are way less in the summer, I thought maybe the natural grounding I've been doing has been helpful, but unsure if the sheet is doing anything. I did read somewhere that using one that actually plugs intoby John21 - AFIBBERS FORUM
Thanks for the update, I'm going to look into that type of yoga. Just wondering what kind of grounding sheet you use. Is it one that plugs into the wall socket? Or do you run a wire outside. If used one for a while , but have been unsure if its doing anything. I have had fewer afib episodes in the summer when I can ground naturally. I'm on a nice streak right now of about 5 1/2 mby John21 - AFIBBERS FORUM
Thanks for posting. Coincidently, my naturopath just recommended I start taking DE to try to help get rid of some intestinal yeast. I just started it this week. I'll be sure to post my resultsby John21 - AFIBBERS FORUM
I have that same memory, possibly one of Jackie's posts, but I do not suppliment with potassium anymore, unless I have that symptom, and it seems to stop it in about 1/2 hour. I've had some success eating a high potassium diet, but not supplimenting with potassium. Alcohol also can give me that feeling, so I stay away from that for the most part too.by John21 - AFIBBERS FORUM
Yes, I forgot to mentino Waller Water, I use it every day, all day.by John21 - AFIBBERS FORUM
Its been over 4 months since my last afib episode on Jan 25 . After that 3rd episode of the month, when trying simply to take a walk in the snow, I started going 100% on the strategy as outlined by Jackie. Brief history: My episodes were almost always adrenergic, and I've been having them for about 7 years, with recently increased episodes to 3/month, but about 1/2 the time I tried to exeby John21 - AFIBBERS FORUM
Thank you Jackie for doing the real research!by John21 - AFIBBERS FORUM
Never had soreness like that from PVCs. Could it be that you had some reflux which caused some pain up in your esophagus? Did it go away the next day after you ate something? If the pain stays, I would get it looked at. Johnby John21 - AFIBBERS FORUM
Louise, I usually put it on my calves and hamstrings, as those are the muscles that I used to have cramps in ( calves really), when I ran. The bottle says just put it all over? I'd stay away from sensative areas. Especially cuts and scraps , because it really burns if you hit one. Jackie, 4-6 grams of Omega 3s? I take 5 of Carlsons fish oil tabs a day and that is only 1.6 grams.by John21 - AFIBBERS FORUM
I use the oil in combination with the Doctors Best Magnesium. One thing I've noticed for sure is that it helps prevent muscle soreness in my legs post lifting. I usually put a little on before working out, then again some at night. And Jackie, did you or someone else post that taking higher doses of fish oil can help "unblock " those receptor sites, so that the magnesium canby John21 - AFIBBERS FORUM
I've been using ribose before and after exercise for about 2 months and have not had those symptoms.by John21 - AFIBBERS FORUM
Absolutely. More PACs, and a significantly higher risk of an adrenergic afib episode. I had to stop exercising at all outside , even fast walking , this winter if it was below 32. It seemed to help if I kept my face covered, it warmed the breath a little which helped. I also had better results breathing through my nose.by John21 - AFIBBERS FORUM
Thanks everyone for your input, Back in NSR today with no skipped beats. Having difficulty with the bowel tolerance thing. At first, I was over 100 mg of magnesium a day, with no bowel issues, now down to 400 and I can't stop "running". I was wondering if I should stop totally for a day or two, until that clears up before ramping up again? I'm not sure what type of colby John21 - AFIBBERS FORUM
Well, I think I spoke too soon with my last post, I've a what I believe to me my first really vagel afib episode. I'm not sure ,but its different than any others. When I am up and moving, my HR is even, but at rest the skipped beats start. I'm not even sure if it's afib, the skipped beats are between every 5 and 60 beats, sometimes only one skip, sometimes a little run ofby John21 - AFIBBERS FORUM
No, Louise, I'm not on any medications, nor have I had an ablation. I'm actually more open to the surgery than to starting meds. I've had the afib for 8 years, but this is the first time I've really committed to improving my diet and trying the entire strategy . I was previously on some magnesium, and I tried half heartedly to avoid some triggers. I guess it took the afibby John21 - AFIBBERS FORUM
It's been 2 months since starting The Strategy as outlined by Jackie, (Thanks Jackie) and I have made it two months without an episode. Overall , my heart has been much calmer with very few irregular beats. Previously, my afib episodes had increased to 3/month, and generally lasted 18-24 hours. I had virtually stopped exercising, since even a fast walk in the cold started an episode..by John21 - AFIBBERS FORUM
