Well known respected doctor.
My interpretation of what Dr. Gupta is recommending is that everyone with an elevated CHA₂DS₂-VASc score should be on anti-coagulants, whether they have afib or not.Quote
Dr G potentially could be opening himself up to malpractice if a patient gets a stroke.

Over the years I've reviewed the studies that were used to develop the CHA₂DS₂-VASc scoring system and its predecessors. I've come to the same conclusions as Dr. Gupta. I've always worked very hard to keep my controllable factors in that system in line.

Susan, the Sanjay Gupta in the video is a cardiologist in the UK. I believe you are referring to the one who is a neurosurgeon and a CNN medical correspondent.

Thanks for sharing your experience, i understand that dehydration can cause the blood to thicken and the kidneys to work harder so this may have contributed to the stroke, which fortunately for you (and us on the forum !) was not severe. I admire your ambition which is indeed encouraging for a young spirited person of 91. Obviously, your mind is still ok, if not super !Quote

I got AF in 1996, it was only a few times a year for a number of years, which was around 19 years, I took no blood thinners during that time. About a year and a half ago I got a stroke, I am on a blood thinner now, my stroke was not too severe, it hit my right arm/leg but I can use them quite well and my mind is OK. I believe one of the reasons for the stroke was I was working outside cutting my grass, I have a lot to cut and it was hot, I was sweating and didn't drink any water during that time (3 hours), it hit me when I was almost finished. I am now 91 years of age and my heart probably was a little high during that time that I was working cutting my lawn. I do tend to have some high BP at times. So, read into this what you think, I do eat well, I have a big garden, fruit trees and I can and freeze a lot, so that could have saved me as well.
