Unless the science has changed since I learned about stress management about 30 years ago, the culprit will be elevated levels of cortisol. It's not bad when having to fight or flee, but when we lose sleep, we increase the stress response and that elevates levels of serum cortisol. In turn, that diminishes the production of IL II (interleukin 2), and promotes the deposition of atherosclerotic plaque.
