metoprolol and gout

metoprolol and gout
December 08, 2023 02:13PM
I have been having gout-like symptoms in a knee. But I have no other factors that typically lead to gout.
EXCEPT: the research says the metoprolol (and other BBs) may contribute to gout and I have been taking metoprolol for 5yrs for afib/flutter.

Anyone here have useful experience/knowledge on this? Thanks. -Sven

Weird that this just came up. I have recently developed pain, redness, and swelling in the first joint of my big toe. I have been thinking it may be gout. I don't really have any typical risk factors for gout that I can think of. But I have been on metoprolol succinate for 2 years for afib. I have never heard that it can contribute to gout. Another piece of the never ending puzzle to the afib journey.

I literally feel your pain.
I am on Bisoprolol but only 1.25mg/day plus 4mg of an ARB. I seem to have a severe bout of gout after stressing my toes while paddle boarding and climbing down some rocks to get to the water.
It seems BB reduce the kidney's ability to remove Uric Acid.
Plus anti coagulants (I am on Xeralto) can affect kidney function.
PLUS we aren't supposed to take anti inflammatory drugs.
Finally went to the doctor after three weeks and have some Colchicine.
Fingers crossed it stops it along with low purine foods.
Will get a blood test next visit
