If you are in afib before your ablation procedure is that ok? Or do they have to start off with you being in NSR?

Being in afib makes it easier treat (ablate) your afib.

I was in Left Atrial Flutter when Prof Haissagurre in Bordeaux performed the ablation and he said its very good that I was. I took this to mean a 'natural' occurring arrhythmia gives a 'real time' view of what is really going on inside the heart rather than a triggered arrhythmia.This is only my own perception of his remark.
