Colonoscopy prep post ablation
December 06, 2018 06:23PM
Hi,
I'm almost 7 months post ablation and doing pretty well. I have my 60 year colonoscopy on Monday and am worried about rhythm issues during the prep. Any experience or advice out there?

Hi Libby - I've written in past posts that when the prep caused me to go into AF ( this was before I had my first ablation), I was given a prescription for an electrolyte-sparing prep called Go-Lytely which worked well and no AF.... (although it contains a terrible ingredient PEG (polyethylene glycol), which I would not otherwise want to take. That was a long time ago and perhaps by now there are better electrolyte-sparing preps available. My GI specialist said I had done so very well for so long, that I could space out my scans for longer periods... so I haven't had to fill an Rx for a long time.

Hope all goes well for you,
Jackie

Tell the gastro’s nurse about the AF history and request the GoLytely prep solution.

Thanks all for easing my mind. I think they did give me Go-Lytely. However, the morning of they want me to add Mag. Citrate. Years ago when my palpitations started I was told to use "CALM", an over the counter magnesium supplement, and I believe, mag citrate. I tried it 3 times. Each time I got bad palpitations for 2 hours after taking. I will call today/don't want to take that. At the time they said it couldn't be the cause, but 3 tries and I don't believe them.

CALM is just magnesium citrate. It's extremely unlikely that caused your palpitations, but if you don't want to take it then just don't. Magnesium isn't the electrolyte to be concerned about with colonoscopy preps. The thing to be concerned about is potassium, and that can be taken care of with coconut water.
