Also, I don't understand the retraction of the esophagus that was concluded as an 'event', as if the PFA encourages to the esophagus to shrink away from the energy being applied. Bizarre.

Maybe PFA causes some muscle stimulation which causes the muscles of the esophagus to contract and thereby pull back from the esophagus. Pure speculation on my part but it sounds plausible.
