Proton Pump Inhibitors PPIs

Proton Pump Inhibitors PPIs
July 16, 2020 09:07AM
The thread I posted to yesterday is no longer there but this is important enough to repost.

Get off prevacid or any PPI - zol drug as soon as possible.

Malcolm Kendrick has covered the damage that PPIs can do to the heart but now we have this in the age of covid.

What are your medical credentials? Are you a Specialist in any field of medicine? I have scarring in my esophagus and stomach lining from daily aspirin use for a stent. Many that specialize in this field would disagree with you. My dosage is small but whatever the case, Personally I feel you are off the rails and fear mongering. Have a wonderful day and I will take my advice from someone who does this for a living not some layman.

Yes, it is alarmist and not very scientific especially when he makes statements like this:

" I am equally certain that you can do everything possible to avoid CVD and still die of a stroke or heart attack. Equally, you can do everything wrong and stay CVD event free. The Gods do like to play dice with us feeble humans."

I was on PPI's daily for 10yrs. Went cold turkey in 2012 to get off them and since then have very rarely had a reflux event. Like all medications they have their time and place.

I need Prilosec or else I swell up and it’s like anaphylactic choking from the narrowing.

I drink hot soup during the day to kill bacteria that Prilosec doesn’t

Smackman, did you even bother to read the links?

Brennan Spiegel MD Director of health research @CedarsSinai Professor of Medicine & Public Health @UCLA peer reviewed paper- Today we released a new study of 53K Americans revealing that use of proton pump inhibitors (eg. Prilosec, Prevacid, Nexium) is associated w/ a 2-4x risk of #COVID19.

We found PPIs were associated with a *dose-response* risk of #COVID19, meaning higher the dose, higher the risk. Twice daily PPI=3.7x risk. Once daily or less=2.2x risk. The effect persisted for long vs. short-term use.

Malcolm Kendrick - arguably (Subotin, Velican) one of the leading authorities on atherosclerotic heart disease in the world.

Take a PPI, take a statin (add in some exo-calcium like Tums if you really like to live stupidly) and watch your CAC score go up 50-100% annually. At least you won't have any save-money-for-retirement worries. Either Covid or heart disease will get you first. (How's that for alarmist?) >grinning smiley<

I am glad after reading various reports that I am on a statin.

Chill, guys. We're in this together.

Thanks Carey. I'll be taking a break for a while earning my medical credentials so I can post links to even more credible and incredible sources.

I'll also be busy trying to find any valid statistics for this liberal fake news hoax virus that happened 4-5 months ago.

You just don't hear anything about it anymore. It's 2020 now, so why should virus19 be of any concern?

Wearing a mask is against the HIPPA clause in the Constitution!

To quote the healthy 30 year old who went to a covid19 party deliberately to catch covid19 first to “win”—his dying words were “I made a mistake, I guess it not a hoax”

I wish you luck and good health.

Have you read the comments on the Martin Spiegel thread? Have you actually read the study? First problem: It was an online study, which renders it instantly and utterly unreliable. People take online surveys all the time and they LIE. They do it all the time in large numbers. Second problem: Look at Table 1, which every commenter agrees renders the study completely unbelievable. According to Table 1, his study group was:

75% 30-39 years old
65% Female
70% Latino
70% High school education or less
20% Unemployed
64% Had an income >$200K
75% Had a normal or underweight BMI
86% Were smokers
68% Were from the southern US

So, in short, his study group was a bunch of 35-year old thin, southern, smoking, latina females with a high school education who earn over $200K per year.

Is there a single thing you find credible about that sample? C'mon, it was an online survey. People take online surveys and lie and they do it in large numbers. For all we know, a bunch of teenage gamers got together to answer that survey with nonsense "for the lolz."

I haven't read Kendrick's stuff and I don't think I'm going to bother.

Look, PPIs have been controversial for a while, with some people proclaiming them utterly toxic and others proclaiming them life-saving meds. I'm pretty sure the truth is somewhere in the middle. What I believe is they're invaluable drugs for short-term use, but they do come with risks and shouldn't be used long-term.

Meanwhile, this has nothing to do with AF, so I'm moving it to the General Health section.

After reading the comments I see that there are some issues with this paper.

However, I come from the base understanding of having read Kendrick's work first (which has not been refuted) and the covid issue was only the cherry on the top.

Since we're primarily concerned with issues of the heart - reading Kendrick makes sense and you can decide for yourself.
