For all of your friends who still think that genetically engineered food is as natural as breathing, send them this video, What is a GMO?, (an excerpt from Genetic Roulette — The Gamble of Our Lives) to learn about the spider-goat, the cowhide-pig and other ways that the biotech scientists want to replace nature.

Great, Todd...Thanks!

On the GMO topic... The Cleveland Plain Dealer carried this which was reprinted from the San Jose (CA) Mercury news (McClatchy-Tribune)

Label genetically engineered food

"A California ballot measure last fall to require labelling of genetically engineered foods was poorly drafted and, unfortunately failed at the polls.
But we hoped the market would force transparency in the sale of genetically altered foods and sure enough, it's beginning:

Last week, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's and some other retailers announced they would not sell genetically engineered seafood in their stores.

AquaBounty Technology of Mass. won provisional approval by the FDA in December for the AquaAdvangage salmon. The fish carries a gene that makes it grow twice as fast as Atlantic salmon. The FDA will issue its final report on what would be the first genetically engineered fish sold in the US stores after the 60-day public comment window closes April 26. The FDA has not indicated that it would require the fish to be labeled.

But Whole Foods, which has more than 300 stores, announced March 20 that it will require labels for all food containing genetically modified ingredients beginning 2018. The movement toward labeling is underway.

Genetically engineered food is labeled in Europe and other parts of the world. It should be labeled in the United States.
And it will be if consumers demand it. "

As a start, here in NEOhio, a local, small food chain of 18 stores in Ohio and one in Illinois announced that it would not be selling any food that is Genetically Modified. Of course, I'm thrilled with that news and perhaps other larger food chains will follow. We can only hope.

More on this topic:

This recent announcement emphasizes the concern for the increasing prevalence of GM foods and reminds us one again to Follow the Money Trail… giving even more reason to avoid them. Take soy for example…since the majority of soybeans grown is GM, it makes soy even more undesirable. Soy, is being touted as healthy protein now being strongly marketed in cereals and protein bars since consumers are now gaining more awareness about the importance of protein in a healthy diet but they lack awareness about the adversities of GM soy.

DuPont to Pay Monsanto Under Patent Truce
[online.wsj.com]

The companies both spend tens of millions of dollars annually on conventional seed breeding, but Monsanto has developed most of the genetically modified traits that are now common across the corn belt. Still, DuPont has an entrenched position in the market through its Pioneer business, giving Monsanto an incentive to license its traits and reap royalties.

With weeds in much of the Midwest developing resistance to glyphosate, seed companies are scrambling to bring new seeds onto the market that withstand other herbicides, such as 2,4-D and dicamba
