About the author:

From <[www.afibbers.org];:

"Dr. Bruce H. Lipton began his scientific career as a cell biologist. He received his Ph.D. Degree from the University of Virginia at Charlottesville before joining the Department of Anatomy at the University of Wisconsin’s School of Medicine in 1973. Dr. Lipton’s research on muscular dystrophy, studies employing cloned human stem cells, focused upon the molecular mechanisms controlling cell behavior. In 1982, Dr. Lipton began examining the principles of quantum physics and how they might be integrated into his understanding of the cell’s information processing systems. He produced breakthrough studies on the cell membrane, which revealed that this outer layer of the cell was an organic homologue of a computer chip, the cell’s equivalent of a brain. His research at Stanford University’s School of Medicine, between 1987 and 1992, revealed that the environment, operating though the membrane, controlled the behavior and physiology of the cell, turning genes on and off. His discoveries, which ran counter to the established scientific view that life is controlled by the genes, presaged one of today’s most important fields of study, the science of epigenetics. Two major scientific publications derived from these studies defined the molecular pathways connecting the mind and body. Many subsequent papers by other researchers have since validated his concepts and ideas."

This book is a groundbreaking work in the field of new biology, and it will forever change how you think about thinking. Through the research of Dr. Lipton and other leading-edge scientists, stunning new discoveries have been made about the interaction between your mind and body and the processes by which cells receive information. It shows that genes and DNA do not control our biology, that instead DNA is controlled by signals from outside the cell, including the energetic messages emanating from our thoughts. Using simple language, illustrations, humor, and everyday examples, he demonstrates how the new science of Epigenetics is revolutionizing our understanding of the link between mind and matter and the profound effects it has on our personal lives and the collective life of our species.

Bruce H. Lipton, Ph.D. is an internationally recognized authority in bridging science and spirit and a leading voice in new biology. A cell biologist by training, he taught at the University of Wisconsin's School of Medicine, and later performed pioneering studies at Stanford University. Author of The Biology of Belief, he has been a guest speaker on hundreds of TV and radio shows, as well as keynote presenter for national and international conferences.

THE MAGICAL MEMBRANE is the title of Chapter 3 in cell biologist Dr. Bruce Lipton's The Biology of Belief.* As it turns out, the cell's plasma membrane is the brain of the cell, not the nucleus as previously believed, and still taught, following deciphering of the nuclear DNA chromosome, the famed Double Helix with its genes. The 'Central Dogma' of genetics biology became "one gene codes for one protein", which although true, ran into trouble when the Human Genome Project counted all the genes on all the chromosomes and found there are far fewer genes (>80% fewer) than there are different proteins making up the human body. This 'oops' ushered in the new biology of Epigenetics which has determined that intelligent control from the membrane manipulates a genetically coded protein into many different proteins, sometimes thousands. Here are some numbers:

-- total number of genes on the human chromosomes: fewer than 25,000
-- total number of different proteins that make up our bodies: more than 120,000.

The previous CR Session 72 focused on the electrical energy generated by the 'integral membrane protein' (IMP) Na,K-ATPase (Na/K pump). Their numbers are vast, many millions per cardiomyocyte, but equally vast are other IMPs, variously called channels, pumps, receptors, effectors, etc., which together make the membrane "a liquid crystal semiconductor with gates and channels", functionally a homologue of a computer chip.

Proper care and feeding of the magical mem-Brain** is of utmost importance to Afibbers.
