Retaining water with no swelling in any part of body.
June 21, 2024 04:26PM
I stay well hydrated during the day but my final fluid intake of the day is half a cup of tea at 7.00 PM.
I empty my bladder (using a catheter) at 8.15 and 10.00 just before going to bed.

I have to use a catheter twice during the night producing up to 2 litres of very clear urine.

I have no swelling at at all in any part of my body.

Anybody got an explanation?

Thanks
Sam

How much do you produce at 8:15 and 10:00, and how much do you drink during the day? Are the input and output totals pretty close?

Thanks for replying Carey.
Input and output totals are fine.
Here are some figures to show what happens during the night.
8.15 PM - 180 ml. 10.00 - 250ml. 1:00 AM - 750ml. 5.AM - 850ml. 6.30.AM - 150ml. No water drunk during this time.
The rest of the the day output for each catheter is around 200ml.

Well, if you're not gaining weight then you're not retaining water. That's a more accurate measure than measuring how much you drink because we get a lot of water from foods we eat (20-30%).

That is way more than normal output at night, especially since you stop drinking early in the evening. Anything over about 2.5L a day is considered excessive. Do you drink alot of water during the day? Over-hydrating can cause excessive urination, but yours is at night after you stopped consuming fluids.

I would see an Endocrinologist and then maybe a kidney specialist. Have you had any bloodwork lately to measure kidney values? Passing excessive fluid could either due to either hormonal imbalance or kidney failure.

I seem to have solved the problem and should have done so some time ago. All my meals are prepared at home. I do not eat any processed foods or add salt to anything. The result is that my sodium levels are always borderline low.

I was familiar with the role of vasopressin in reducing urine during the night but didn't look into how to increase it till very recently.

The simple answer is more salt in the diet. I started taking 2 teaspoons of bicarb at teatime and the immediate result was a big reduction of urine at night and one instead of two trips to the bathroom during the night.
