What is the downside of "making burns on the Atria"? I'd watch but it's 25 minutes ..by afhound99 - AFIBBERS FORUM
I never had those side effects. I agree, I'd not use it with that kind of reaction. What does your Cardio/EP have to say about it?by afhound99 - AFIBBERS FORUM
Re "if you tried a specific iodine protocol to stop Afib prior to ablation." I also had an ablation about 2 years ago now and I did try Iodine before that.. I used Iodoral, Lugols or KI for 6 months and I did not detect any AF during that period BUT it (AF beast) came back with a vengeance.. I was very disappointed as I thought somehow that Iodine was going to work. Of course it miby afhound99 - AFIBBERS FORUM
There was a recent article in the NY Times that stated Outside of surgery, a diagnosis of atrial fibrillation is recognized as a major risk factor. It is the cause nationwide of at least one out of six ischemic strokes, the most common type of stroke, which disrupt blood flow to the brain. Strokes that are linked to atrial fibrillation are often more debilitating and lethal than strokes attribby afhound99 - AFIBBERS FORUM
Some Cardios believe in benign neglect when it comes to AF. I had one like that. He said drugs (presumably he meant Flec) were 'nasty' and that ablation had some risks and wasn't always effective, and that if AF wasn't bothering me to just live with it. But he went on to prescribe Flec anyway - I told him AF was bothering me - if not physically then pyschologically. Note noby afhound99 - AFIBBERS FORUM

I agree, when it's affecting your life best to get it done (ablation) unless you are sure you are controlling it (no hidden AF) with supplements, diets and/or trigger identification and avoidance. I thought I had fixed it with Iodine - went 6 mths without a noticeable incident. But AF came back strong. It plays with our minds like Descartes' Evil Demon.. I realize some people are scaby afhound99 - AFIBBERS FORUM
It may be no remodelling or little has taken place though as jahines53 only has had PAF for 2 years and it was terminated each time. I had the same situation to some extent, PAF for a few years and it was only during the year preceding the ablation that I used Flec. I had no remodelling going on according to my EP. So while ablation might be a scary prospect, it might be wise to at least consideby afhound99 - AFIBBERS FORUM
When I took 300mg Flec PIP it would sometimes take 20 hrs. Worth trying but everyone is differentby afhound99 - AFIBBERS FORUM
Hi Ralph. Great to be through that ordeal isn't it. And the Foley was the worst part of the whole thing for me too.by afhound99 - AFIBBERS FORUM
"I don't think ablation is warranted for me a total of three episodes of AF, and please remember this. I am no hurry to consider ablation" Got it, sorry. I wouldn't think about it either if you just had 3 episodes .... especially if infrequent and far apart..by afhound99 - AFIBBERS FORUM
According to Dr Barrett (my EP) , taking Flecainide without Diltiziam or similar calcium channel blocker is not recommended.by afhound99 - AFIBBERS FORUM
I am quite comfortable with lesions in the heart that stop AF but only after getting truly sick to death of 3 episodes a week. In the end the only thing that would terminate an AF episode was Flecainide as I mentioned elsewhere and if that stopped working I'd be further down the road and maybe with some impediment to a 'standard' PVI which is what I ended up getting. I don't think beta blockers work with AF, at least most of the time. Before I used the PIP I would sometimes be able to get out of AF doing a spell on the exercise bike, or taking a swim, but it didn't always work. If you were in Massachusetts I know Mass General takes Medicaid and they have a good EP Lab - maybe the same in some other states with good EP hospitals. But that may not bby afhound99 - AFIBBERS FORUM
Yes forgot to add, 300mg Flec + 25mg Diltiziam - seems a pretty common combination. While Flecainide can be proarrhythmic in some clinical situations, I think the requirement for hospital for the first dose mainly applies to Tikosyn. Twenty-five years in the making: flecainide is safe and effective for the management of atrial fibrillationby afhound99 - AFIBBERS FORUM
Only thing that worked for me was ablation or Flec PIP which use was getting more frequent. So I had ablation. Does Medicaid cover it?by afhound99 - AFIBBERS FORUM

Depends what your work is. If physical, forget about it. Same for the runs. This is after all, heart surgery of one kind or another. You're going to have to take it easy for a while.by afhound99 - AFIBBERS FORUM

, so the patient often merely does not feel the palpatations, and thinks that their still in NSR. The symptoms may be sucessfully treated, not the condition itself. That is why the EP Ablationists always want their patients on Anti-coag's just for added protection. This seems wrong to me. EKGs, Holter harnesses and other devices can show NSR. From what Dr Barrett told me, while there is deliberate scarring around the PVs the tissue that is scarred was not contributing to heart function, so it doesn't matter was my takeaway..by afhound99 - AFIBBERS FORUM
I asked Dr Barret about that (doctor who did my ablation coming up for 2 years ago) - he said ablation improves heart function. I guess I'd look at it another way. How long will your heart last with an AF burden?by afhound99 - AFIBBERS FORUM
Thanks Peggy, I was just reading this in today's NY Times Science section. The question they pose is:- But hundreds of thousands of consumers with atrial fibrillation continue to take it, and for them, a new quandary has emerged: Should they switch to another blood-thinner?by afhound99 - AFIBBERS FORUM
