Coumadin & supplements
October 10, 2003 11:37AM
I have been taking coumadin for four and a half years and will continue for at least 8 more months out of fear of increasing my risk of stroke. This is the standard advice given by both doctors I consulted with at Cleveland Clinic and about 6 more in the area.

I see that many of you are taking a bunch of different supplements.

I want to try Omega & Magnesium, but if you are on Coumadin, you are not suppossed to change what you consume or alter your lifestyle because it may alter your INR (International Normalized Ratio) level. And then you might not be protected from a stroke if its too low or you may develop internal bleeding if its too high. It's suppossed to be 2.0-3.0.

But if you do make changes, you are suppossed to get your blood tested two weeks after the change.

Does anyone whose on Coumadin have experience with these different supplements and wether they made your INR level go up or down?

Tired of getting stuck,
Nancy
