New onset of Afib 78 yo woman
June 10, 2025 01:31AM
My friend was just diagnosed with Afib, they cardioverted her, but she went back into Afib the next day. Her hr is over 100, and she cannot get into an EP until September. This seems like so long to wait, but my question is would they consider an ablation in someone her age?
Thanks!

Member Jackie was about 79 when she had her last ablation with Dr. Natale. I think it all depends on the condition of the person. Here is Jackie telling her story: [www.afibbers.org]

Age is not a limitation. Physical health is, but not age.

You say her HR is over 100. How far over 100?

And yeah, September is along time to wait. While she waits, she could use a rate control drug such as metoprolol, which even her PCP should be willing to prescribe unless she has problems with low blood pressure. And depending on her CHADS-Vasc score, she may need to be on a blood thinner too if it's 2 or higher, which it probably is due to her age. That one her PCP might not be willing to prescribe, but she should talk to them and ask about low-dose aspirin in the meantime.

I am almost 81 and had an ablation this morning at Southlake in Ontario, Canada. The EP did tell me he thought I should not have another after this because of my age, (just when I was thinking I'd probably be back for my third in about twelve more years) but I remember Dr Verma telling my brother that after three ablations he could not have a fourth seven years ago and he just recently had another one with Dr Khaykin also at Southlake at age 82. Things do improve with the passing of time and the latest developments in the technology.

I'd suggest your friend go to the ER. The heart doesn't like to go too fast for too long. The main pump can get tired and not contract normally and one could go into heart failure. If she can't get in to the EP doc she at least needs rate control medication and a blood thinner.

One does not need permission to go to the ER. Based on her age, there shouldn’t be a resistance for them to ECV her. She just needs to use her voice and be her own advocate. I was ECV over 50 times. It’s quick and she will hopefully be more comfortable in nsr.
