Sinus Rhythm with Wide QRS

Sinus Rhythm with Wide QRS
February 15, 2025 03:54PM
Hello everyone. I had a cardioversion (my second) two days ago which put me back into normal rhythm. The doctor told me that there's an ablation in my future, which is fine with me.

I'm a 73 year old man.

I performed a Kardia moble EKG yesterday and was overjoyed to see a sinus rhythm for the first time since the new year. But today my Kardia EKG says that I'm in sinus rhythm with wide QRS. I checked the web for info about wide QRS and I can't tell if this is serious or not. I have an appointment with an electrophysiologist on May 19. Am I going to make it?

It could be artefact in the Kardia ECG data, I can get a wide QRS reading if I'm not careful in the recording procedure. Wetting the electrodes is very useful, saliva is good as there are electrolytes in it. If it is the original device, the data transmission is via sound (the 6L is via Bluetooth), so recording in a quiet environment with your hands stabilized, like resting on a table is good. Here are some suggestions:

Thanks, George. My Kardia is newer and uses bluetooth but I’m not ruling out an artifact. I’ll try an EKG later. If I’m still getting a wide QRS tomorrow then I’ll send the result to my cardiologist.

Hi you likely have a complete right bundle branch block causing the wide QRS. Normally not serious unless u have other heart problems like heart failure .I have to guess this pattern was present in past EKGs. My suggestion is confirming ithis with your cardiologist. Unless there are some other heart conditions in general it is not considered a serious life threatening heart rhythm.
PS I am not a cardiologist but I am an MD with some expertise in cardiac disorders.
Hope this helps .

Hugging, thanks for the informative and reassuring response. I still intend to notify my cardiologist but I’m not as worried as I had been.

Next day...

This is weird. When I use the Kardia app on my tablet I get a normal sinus rhythm. When I use the app on my phone, I still get "wide QRS". (sigh) I do feel chest sensations (don't know how to describe them, it's not pain) and shortness of breath. But I don't know...

Thanks for listening.

You mentioned you do have some chest sensations and short of breath. Did I hear that correctly? If this is so, and you have not discussed these with an MD, why don't you get it checked out asap. Better to error on the side of over-reacting vs under-reacting when it comes to chest sensations and heart health; seem reasonable? ...I say that as a very experienced paramedic...

Hi Jeff. Last night my symptoms got so bad that I did go to the emergency room. It turns out that my heart and rhythm are fine. My legs, feet and belly were extremely swollen. For some reason I had been retaining fluid and this was the cause of my chest sensations and breathing difficulties. I received intravenous Lasix (diuretic) and spent the night making rivers. This helped my symptoms but the doctor doesn’t know why I’m retaining fluid. I’ll need more tests, the results of which will be beyond the scope of this forum.

And my Kardia “wide QRS” result? GeorgeN was right: probably an artifact.
