TAKE-HOME MESSAGE
This nationwide registry–based study evaluated the relationship between ischemic heart disease (IHD) and atrial fibrillation (AF) recurrence after catheter ablation. Among 12,162 patients (mean age, 62.0 years; female, 30.3%) who underwent first-time AF ablation in Denmark from 2010 to 2020, approximately 20.0% had preexisting IHD. Although preexisting IHD was initially associated with an increased risk of AF recurrence, this association was not significant after multivariable adjustment. In contrast, newly diagnosed IHD after AF ablation was associated with a significantly increased risk of AF recurrence.
These findings suggest that, although preexisting IHD does not reduce the effectiveness of AF ablation, new-onset IHD after ablation could trigger AF recurrence.
