Sharing some take aways from this year's forum that concluded on 8/11/2024. You can go to their website for a deeper dive on the presenters and their presentations.

Review of updated guidelines for AFIB treatment guidelines ( you can find on line)
Most Clinical Trials are focused on ablation tools, mapping tools, as the various tech companies want to have approved ASAP. (no surprise)
No new AFIB drugs in the pipeline
Several new NOACs will be coming out in 2024 - I was in a focus group for one in last stages of approval. Looking a once a month injection.
Pulse field ablation is gaining popularity and use - opinion at some point will be the gold standard. Only authorized for "traditional" ablation for PVI, however will likely be expanded to other arrythmia conditions.
Still some issues with leaks from watchman and other devices. Follow up is very important.

There are 3 clinical trials in the Netherlands for treatment of AFIB using:

Histamines

L Glutamine - you can read about it here:
[afiponline.org]

Drug known as GGA - it has been in use in Japan for many years - not for AFIB, but appears to help cardiac arrythmia - you can read more about it here:

Interesting information. I’m a great believer in this type of research.

I have been eating the Japanese fermented soybean food Natto every second day since 2004 and have been afib free since then (no ablation). Also, I have not had a cold, flue or COVID over this time.

Natto is a very complex food. What part of the natto is keeping me afib free? Who knows.

If you are interested in natto this research paper will show you the complexities of natto and tell you all about it:

It is interesting, I started eating natto food after your reports back then and then after quite a few months realized it was having some kind of negative impact on my digestion (don't recall the specifics now). I started eating it again a number of months ago, but this time focused on organic natto and ditched the sauce & mustard. Have not had any issues this time.

I was doing OK eating Natto every 2nd day, it reduced my afib to a couple events a year..
Then covid came and upset the apple cart, in a big way.
I have since had an ablation which, so far is very successful.
As I am on pradaxa, I can't take natto now, which is a shame.

Dean - I don't know anything about natto (the food that is - very familiar with the supplements). Can I ask you what specific brand you eat and where you buy it? And what does it taste like and how do you eat it (straight out of the bottle or do you eat something with it)?

If you can't share the brand or where you buy it, can you provide some general guidelines as to what to look for when buying it? I just have a Target and Walmart near me with some general local grocery stores. I can't imagine they sell natto but maybe they do?

I eat Natto every other day for the purpose of stronger bone (I have Osteoporosis). Good to know it's beneficial for the heart as well, one stone two birds smiling smiley

Travis - Any Asian grocery store should be able to get it. Also Asian restaurants might order it in for you. Your general grocery store might be able to order it in too. Don't know about Target or Walmart.

I normally eat the organic natto and it comes in foam packets of 3 or 4 and is in the freezer section. I order 2 box's of it and store it in a large chest freezer so it lasts about 4 months. Inside the packet there is usually a satchel of mustard and fish sauce to mix it in but these are high in salt so I add a bit of sweet chilly sauce instead.

If you are taking blood thinners you will need to be careful as natto is also a blood thinner.

Hi Travis, I second Dean's asian grocery suggestion. I try to eat organic natto, if available. I just eat mine straight, but I do put extra virgin olive oil on it (see the end of this post).

In this link for an article on natto by the respected EP, Dr. John Day (and posted some time ago by Dean) [drjohnday.com] he lists a place that will ship if you don't have these stores nearby. You can also ferment your own. There are powdered starters available. Though I've not fermented natto, I do ferment soy milk (that I make myself from organic soybeans) with a different bacteria. I always soak my beans overnight, throw away the soak water and pressure cook the beans for 5 minutes and then let them naturally reduce pressure for 25 minutes in my Instant Pot before blending in filtered water to make soy milk. This Instant Pot is programmable, so I set it to hold 100 deg F for 36 hours to do my ferment.

Dean has posted extensively on natto over the years, here is a search on his natto posts [www.afibbers.org]

Here is a link on DIY natto [culturesforhealth.com]
Another source for natto starter: [www.gemcultures.com]
If you can get to a store that has commercial natto, but it is farther than you like to drive frequently, you could get some commercial natto and use it as a starter for DIY natto. Then save back some of the DIY batch as a starter and continue this way.

Not that I recommend this for others without talking to their EP, but I am on Eliquis and am eating natto. I'm very active, rock climbing and the like, and I've not had excessive bleeding issues when I rip my arm or leg skin on the rock after taking a whipper. The wound does scab over and heal nicely.

Member NotLyingAboutMyAfib has posts on consuming extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) with your natto/nattokinase [www.afibbers.org] and [www.afibbers.org] The purpose is to significantly increase absorption of vitamin K2- MK7.

Hi George, how often do you eat Natto.
I would like to try eating it again but do bleed badly when I cut myself. I am taking 110mgs pradaxa twice daily.
My EP said no as had no experience with Natto.
I could try not taking the morning pradaxa when I eat Natto.
