Xarelto and low iron

Xarelto and low iron
August 03, 2024 12:50AM
My iron and Ferretin levels have always been really good. I have been taking Xarelto for 10 months, and my levels are 50% what they were before starting AC. My primary thinks is has to do with the Xarelto and is scheduling me for testing with my GI dr.

Should I stop taking the xarelto until my testing is over. My primary doesn't understand why i still need to be on DOAC if my afib is gone (had a successful PFA in March). She also is thinking that the risks from the blood thinner are greater than stroke risk.

Is there any documentation available on this?

No, don't stop the Xarelto. For one, if the Xarelto really is at fault then you stopping it might conceal that from the gastrologist. Second, don't try to argue with your PCP by throwing research papers at them. Your EP and the gastrologist are the ones who should be deciding this issue, so if your PCP wants to argue about it have her call them and discuss it directly.

And to answer your question, yes, there are studies showing that not being actively in afib doesn't mean you don't need anticoagulation. It's not as simple as your PCP (and most people) think. Having afib predisposes you to clot formation even when you're not in afib, which is why the CHADS-Vasc score is so important.

I just got my results back from blood work ordered by my doctor. Guess what, my iron level, Ferritin levels are low and I do take xarelto, I never have low iron, at least since getting blood work done over the past years. I have been feeling a little tried and perhaps my low iron is responsible.

It could be, you should get repeat blood work done approximately 3 weeks after the last time and see if it’s improved.

It’s 6 months since my successful ablation, and I am still extremely fatigued. My ferretin levels have moved up a couple of points, but is still low, all of the other blood work is good and ekg is good as well. I’ve had an upper endoscopy and am scheduled for colonoscopy next month. They’ve stopped the anticoagulant until after the the procedure.
Any idea what can be causing this extreme fatigue?
