Does Metoprolol extended release impair the digestive function and cause diarrhea? Thanks!

I've never heard of anyone experiencing that from metoprolol and I've encountered literally hundreds of people who've taken it, including myself. It's also not listed as a known side effect on drugs.com.

Says it’s 1-10% common (not rare) to get diarrhea. Maybe Afibber20 falls into this category. Someone has to.

Gastrointestinal

Common (1% to 10%): Diarrhea, nausea, dry mouth, gastric pain, constipation, flatulence, heartburn, abdominal pain, vomiting

I appreciate the responses from both of you very much. In an AFib workshop, this question is also raised. However, most people, including general practitioners and specialists, think Metoprolol is very safe and do not link it with GI symptoms.

Great! You got your answer! It’s not linked.

YOUR link. Scroll down to gastrointestinal. Try professional and not consumer but I saw it on your link. After the ads of toast and eggs “5 foods never to eat”. Easy to miss.

So it does. My bad. I didn't switch to professional.

But I don't really believe it based on anecdotal experience. This is the very first report of GI issues from metoprolol I've ever heard, and like I said, I've known hundreds of people taking it. Going by the 1-10% numbers, I should have heard at least a few by now. Side effect stats are always so messed up because they have to report every single thing any patient reports, even the totally crazy stuff. That's why headache, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea are listed as side effects of every drug on the planet.

Another thing about metoprolol: for those who are poor metabolizers of CYP2D6, you can get ‘overdose’ symptoms at regular doses. I am a poor metabolizer and my pharmacogenetics report says to reduce the dose by 75% if it is prescribed. Because of this, I was prescribed propranolol instead.

The potential impact of genetics on metabolization of drugs was recently brought home to me when I got complete heart block from a normal dose of Flecainide, which is also mainly metabolized through CYP2D6.

Daisy- where did you get your pharmacogenetics report? I frequently post about CYP450 metabolization. I twice had a flecainide serum test done at Labcorp but I wasn’t aware of a general pharmacogenetics report to test drugs and it’s affects on one’s liver enzymes and unique metabolism. Do you have a lab and test number/code to provide?

My EP ordered mine from Asperio Labs and they sent a report on my response to hundreds of drugs, as well as a list of drugs that I should never take, including common drugs like metoprolol and codeine. I just looked for their website and only found a Facebook page, so I am not sure if they still do this testing but I am told that there are other labs that do it.

Thanks

I can’t open their website. [asperiolabs.com] Or phone number. Maybe they are out of business. Interesting test!

Pharmacogenomics is the study of how genes affect how a drug works and a person’s response to a particular drug.
It is a relatively new field that combines pharmacology (the study of how drugs work in the body) and genetics (the study genes and their functions) to develop safe and effective medication and dosages.

The goal of pharmacogenetics is to understand the part that a person's genetic make-up plays in how well a medicine works and what side effects are likely to occur in that person.

Understanding this can help us modify drugs best suited to a specific person in the future and predict how someone would react to a certain medicine prior to giving it. “

Metoprolol was one of the drugs the VA put me on when they created the Afib I had. It did nothing but make the sessions more intense. My heart felt like it was going to explode out my chest like the little alien in "Alien." As long as this was happening my whole day was ruined. I could do absolutely nothing but sit and wait until it was all over. The sessions usually took 24 to 30 hours. I kept complaining about it to the so-called "health professionals" at the VA but they refused to listen to me. It wasn't until I began using d-ribose instead of Metoprolol the sessions reduced their intensity. I got this from Dr. Stephen Sinatra's protocol.

Then, last November I had cryoablation at Cedars Sinai in L.A. It feels so good to not feel my heart going off every couple of weeks and hanging me up for a whole day. I'm waiting to talk to my cardiologist to get the Watchman Device implanted so I don't have to take those lousy blood thinners anymore. Blood thinners do absolutely nothing for the heart.
