NSR / FIBS / NSR / FIBS / NSR / FIBS ...

A couple of years ago I had fibs so bad in the middle of the night that I went to the ER. There I was given a drip & in 4 hours converted. But it's what happened in those four hours that still makes me scratch my head.

The doc/nurses monitoring me said that I was in and out of FIB several times before finally converting back to NSR.

I'm wondering if that happens to anyone else, and what do you think causes it?

Nancy,

That was my experience, too. From what we now think we understand, I'd say the likely cause is the atrial myocytes' voltage (membrane potential) gradually increases (sputter sputter) until finally it's high enough to sustain NSR. Conversely, a gradually lowering voltage causes increasing pacs (sputters) and finally afib. The ol' AF cycle...
