How Much Supplements Do I Take
July 10, 2008 06:34PM
Hi everyone, I have just purchased Taurine 675 mg each tablet, Magnessium Glycinate 100 mg each tablet, and Potassium Citrate 99 mg each tablet. I get pac's and pvc's throughout the day. What is the safe amount of each I should be taking and when is the best time to take them, i.e with or without food and day or night. Im sure this topic has been discussed before but I missed out on it...thanks to all.

Frank -

1. It's always wise to know that your kidneys are functioning normally before beginning supplemental electrolytes. If you haven't been tested, you should be.

2. At the same time, test for Red Blood Cell levels of magnesium and serum levels of potassium so you know your baseline.

3. Always ramp up slowly in dosing.... go for 4 - 5 days and if all is well, increase by another dose. Obviously, stop if you have adverse symptoms.

4. Always add magnesium first for several weeks or a month at least before adding potassium as if you are severely deficient in magnesium, adding potassium can worsen afib.

5. For these three nutrients - With Meals may be easier to remember. Without meals - will not matter much either way.

6. Keep a simple log of your doses and record any changes, positive or negative as a reference. Your goal should be to stop the afib with the least amount of supplements needed. That's why ramping up and waiting a bit in-between increases is smart.

7. Hydrate well with pure water - avoid municipal water if possible.

Magnesium - Start with 200 mg
If your events are mostly during the night; start with a bedtime dose first.
Eventually, the goal will be to get in at least 600 mg preferably 800 mg which would be 200 with each meal and 200 at bedtime. If you can tolerate more, then go to 1000 mg. People who are severely deficient may need the 1000 mg and often 1200 mg to reach intracellular saturation.
A symptom of that saturation is loose stools or diarrhea. At the first sign of either, back off with dosing because this condition loses electrolytes which is obviously counterproductive.

Potassium -
You have the tablet form and you will have to consume many tablets to get a large enough dose. When that supply is finished, you may want to consider getting the bulk powder - potassium gluconate NOW brand. 1 teaspoon equals 540 mg. (See Hans web vitamin link)

What you have now - 99 mg tablets.... take 5 at a time - with meals is good as it will help counterbalance any sodium intake from food. Start this in a couple weeks after you are dosing with at least 600 mg of magnesium. Start by adding five tablets or 500 mg - 3 meals a day for several weeks. If all goes well, you can ramp up again by doubling doses.

The daily potassium Recommended Daily Allowance is 1.9 grams to 5.6 grams*... that's 1900 milligrams to 5600 milligrams. Most nutritional experts recommend getting at least half that requirement from food sources.

This is just a rule of thumb... check the CR Session #61 to see the various intake plans of those contributors. Everyone responds differently.

Taurine
3 grams a day 1000 mg - 3 times a day.... would be good to start. You may find you don't need that much. One at bedtime helps many people so you may want to try that dose first.

Email me if you have questions.
