Which Magnesium is best ??
October 18, 2003 05:50PM
Can anyone tell me if magnesium glycinate is any better than Magnesium Oxide, which I have been taking with so so results? Google shows many sources of Mag. Gly. but they only have 100 mg of Mag. and other vitamins such as vitamin E etc. I only have to take 4 pills of Mag oxide to get a 1000 mg of mag but would have to take 10 pills of mag Gly. and it is a lot more expensive. Thanks for any info you can give me on this.

Mont, use the search function of this board and punch in 'magnesium' or just 'glycinate' and you will find out why the glycinate form is what most people here are using, including myself. There are older posts on here that explain it better than i can. As for sources, i use Carlson's, their website is www.carlsonlabs.com. It is more expensive but also more effective, and has no other supplements with it. Good luck with everything.

Hi, Peggy. Went to Carlson's site. Did a search and only found mag oxide.

Do you recall the price of the glycinate? Thanks!

Willner Chemists, at 1-800-633-1106, carries magnesium glycinate by Pure Encapsulations, which has 120mg magnesium glycinate with 10mg vit.C. I don't recall the price, but you can call them and ask. Magnesium oxide is almost usless, so it is worth spending more on the glycinate, which is one of the best, if not the best form of magnesium as far as absorption goes.

Mont - magnesium glycinate can be more expensive than magnesium oxide - that's for sure, but it is far more effective because it is designed to be highly absorbable or bioavailable. Additionally, at elevated doses - which is where you need to be, it does not cause bowel intolerance.

I see Lorraine has advised Willner Chemists....as a good source. It's worth it to pay the additional money and get results.

PC also recommended the KAL brand of magnesium glycinate - just be sure you don't get one that has calcium in it...or if it does, a small amount because calcium suppplements can contribute to afib.

Good luck. Jackie

I have found that 300mg of the glycinate does more for me than 500mg of the oxide....

FWIW,

Has anyone tried magnesium taurate? Our homeopathic/naturalpathic doctor has found out this is the best magnesium for AFIB and absorbsion. She also pointed out yet again that one can be "cardioverted" out of AFIB attacks with IV magnesium. So far it is working better than glycerate.

Hi Everyone!
I'm new to the boards and have spent the evening reading thru the posts. What a wonderful site - it sure helps to hear about the experiences of others with the same problem. I was diagnosed about 14 years ago with benign PVC's and had my first episode of a-fib in July of 2001 after spending 11 days in the hospital due to pancreatitis and then gall bladder surgery. (History of GERD) I thought the first episode may have been caused by low blood sugar - started during the night and lasted about 6 hours, then stopped. No more a-fib for 20 months then a second episode, during the night lasting about 6 hours. Then 5 weeks later I had my third episode (after a high fat dinner and afternoon of drinking and partying) and went to the ER where I finally learned that what I had been experiencing was a-fib. That episode lasted 13 hours and converted on it's own. I was fine again for about 8 months but last month I got the flu and a sinus infection and had 2 more episodes in Dec. - again, during the nite, lasting about 6 hours. I have been on a beta blocker for years for high blood pressure and accuretic - tolerate them well. My doctors have suggested warfarin but so far I am resisting. I am however very interested in all the posts about magnesium. I do take aspirin and vitamin E and a supplement with calcium/magnesium/zinc. But now I'm reading that the calcium could cause a-fib and wonder about the fact that women need calcium and what are we suppose to do about that? Would love to hear from anyone - I'm open to discussion and sharing of experiences. Thanks and be well. Kay
