Magnesium and Pulse

Since women generally outlive men, notwithstanding the old joke that the reason men die first is because they want to, I decided to try PC's magnesium glycinate 400mg twice a day (KAL brand) and since the girls were on my case about sugar, I stopped the semi-sweet chocolate and the ice cream except for one handful of chocolate to celebrate the curse of the Billy Goat and the Bambino. I did pitch in Yankee stadium about 40 years ago and can still hear the echo of my fastball hitting the catcher's mitt during a try out but I digress. I have been off the sweets for over a week and only 3 days on the magnesium, it may be my imagination but I seem to feel better already. My blood pressure/pulse machine is now showing my pulse at more like 78 to 82 after previously always being more like 95 to 105. Could the better pulse rate be a function of the magnesium glycinate? In any case I am considering putting PC, Fran, Jackie and Carol up for sainthood while the Pope is in a good mood.

I suspect your pulse rate is totally down to the elimination of chocolate etc and the introduction of Mg. Normal diets just don't give enough Mg - and sweet consumption depletes it even further. Keep popping them. If the urge for something sweet hits try sundried dates - I don't think there is anything sweeter.

I'll skip the sainthood - more in line for devils advocate...

But seriously - give freely what has been given.

Thanks for reporting back to us, Howie

It would be interesting to conduct a survey of magnesium supplementation, now that so many people seem to be giving mag. gly. a try .

If my constant harping on the benefits of magnesium glycinate has led any afibbers to mg. and helped them get better or go into remission, I have to take my hat off to Michael from San Francisco for posting his success with the macromineral quite awhile ago. I think that he was the one who started the ball rolling in that direction. I saw his post and he filled me in with the details.

Thanks again, Michael.

Carol,

If you do a search of previous posts on this BB, I think you'll find someone named Camille to be the first to mention this form of Mg on 3/12/01. Hans approved this choice in response. But I think Jerry has really been singing the praises of this Mg chelate since 11/07/02, although he's been taking it for much longer than that. Please visit

Walt Stoll, MD, Erling's oft quoted source, has recommended this form for a long time as well.

Howie,

Your comments are very much appreciated by all of us. Personally I'd give the nod for sainthood to Hans.

PC

Your update just reminds me of what a newcomer - and neophyte - I am to this site. Of course, I had no idea that there were earlier advocates of magnesium. I came on the scene when Michael was posting.

The important thing is that people get better and people help one another.

Carol,

Well said.

Like you, I too am a relative neophyte. Hans has been waging battle nearly single handedly against this unwelcome visitor for many more years than I.

Howie - Magnesium relaxes the blood vessels and in turn will lower blood pressure and your heart rate...no question about it.

You've seen my many posts extolling the benefits of magnesium glycinate, but remember, it was not until I actually increased the daily amounts to almost double what I had been taking that I experienced NSR and no breakthroughs while on Flecanide.

I have now lowered the dose to around 500 - 600 mg. a day, but previously I was only taking between 300 - 400 mg glycinate and apparently, that was just not enough.

I have been taking mag glycinate for about 5 years - as recommended by my MD, but not at a dose high enough to correct what was undoubtedly a severe magnesium deficiency or deficit.

Feeling better is not your imagination. Almost instantly, at the increased doses, I felt a calmness I had not experienced in a very long time. My muscles relaxed (and of course my heart) and I began to sleep extremely well. Sugar, though, I do not do having learned long ago it was a trigger for afib and since I was insulin resistant a while back, all those symptoms contribute to a revving up of afib.

Good luck with your new lifestyle. Please keep us posted as you enjoy better health. Regards, Jackie

I hope that this isn't fuzzy speculation, but is it possible that taking increased (above the RDA) amounts of magnesium works not only by restoring depleted magnesium levels, but acts also as a natural tranquillizer in those afibbers, who are not magnesium depleted?

Perhaps it works both ways.

It goes without saying - but it should be said - that without Hans and this web site, his brainchild, most of us would be struggling with afib, alone and in the dark.

Carol - I'll second that - again and again. Hats off to Hans! He is the hero. I'd have been lost in despair had I not found this site.

Don't forget that every afibber who hasn't done so, needs to order Hans' book. We can't afford not to have it as a reference. I continually refer to mine and now that ablation is coming up for me, I'm re-reading all the pertinent areas - which is practically the whole book.

Thanks, Carol and Hans!

PC, Carol and Jackie,

Thank you so much for your kind words about the web site and my research. It makes it all worthwhile.
