$300 Stress reducing biofeeback device
May 09, 2006 08:54AM
I decided to buy the "stresseraser"; an ipod size device that is a kind of mini biofeeback device breathing monitoring device. If you breath "correctly" you get into a "relaxation" zone. It costs a painful $300 btw.

I hope that the device can help me deal with anxiety.

The unit can fit in your pocket...for those times your get anxious on the outside. I've only had it for two days, so the jury is out on how it works. Good Morning America had a 6 minute piece on it that was compelling enough for me to pull out the trusty charge card.

This sounds intriguing. Am big on breathing exercises and meditation and would love to hear how this works for you.

The guy in this link analyzed it and thinks that 5 breaths for minute is optimal - this would be about 6 seconds inhale & 6 seconds exhale. He sells CD's that prompt you to breathe with a chime or such at 6 second intervals. You could probably make your own with a cassette & then try it.

I've played with this time interval & watched my Freezeframe pulse monitor & it dose seem to be an effective interval for "coherence" & stress reduction.

My suggestion would be to breathe in & out every 6 seconds, without really thinking too hard about it. Just let it happen. Maybe make a tape with a little chime sound every 6 seconds. Close your eyes and breath in and out diaphramatically (also gently & easily) through the nose.

liz, you might try this interval with the stresserasser & see if it works for their system.

Have fun!

I have found the Resperate device very useful in producing relaxation or in getting back to sleep. It is designed to reduce blood pressure.

It works by slowing down your breathing by presenting a hymn-like series of chordal tones at a gradually decreasing rate. The starting rate is determined by your rate as measured over four respirations. You wear earphones and an elastic band with a small breathing sensor around your chest or your middle.
