Joint and Muscle Pain,

Joint and Muscle Pain,
October 29, 2003 06:33PM
Hi

some months ago I had contacted this board regarding joint and muscle pains which were quite severe at the time. My first experiment, dropping my meds did not help, however, dropping my vitamins did. Apparently that was just a fluke, further experimenting did not support that theory, unfortunately. Keeping records helped me find another cause, somehow related to veggies. A vegetable soup (string beans, carrots, onions, celery, garlic etc.) part of my former diet was reintroduced and my pains disappeared. I am back to taking all my vitamins, and luckily no more pains. I am still not sure what is making the difference, but if I stop the veggies, the pains will become noticeable within a few days.
Also, I found some of the fillers used in my vitamin capsules cause an allergic reaction. Still lots of question, but at least no more pain.

You left out part of the puzzle. When you shift to lots of vegetables you will decrease your intake of something else. What was the something else that you decreased your intake of?

Did you have acid drinks like orange juice, as i know that can cause joint pains and anything with Aspartime in like fizzy drinks it doesnt have to be diet drinks either.
I'm suffering with painful joint and muscle pains in my legs i'm wondring if it is associated with Warfarine as it did mention if you have bruising of any kind which does feel like it not to take it. Seems like i put on a lot of weight over last year and dont eat any more than used to infact i eat less.

Lisa:
You're not on any statin drugs are you? Because those can cause rabdomyolysis (sp) or muscle deterioration and usually affects neck and shoulders or hips. Their notorious for it.

Hi,

I am also taking Coumadin, so I have to treat all K containing Foods with great respect. A bowl of my vegetable soup did not seem to have a great impact on my p/t, what I did reduce were fruits, such as dried apricots, juices, and some of my orangy colored foods, such as yams.
My believe is, that it is something I was lacking since the rest of my diet would be considered healthy. At one point I thought of Coumadin as a possible culprit, but when I had to stay off it for two days because of dental problems, and my aches worsened, I felt it coudn't be the Coumadin. And no, I do not take any statin drugs.

I have joint pain in my knees, mostly. I notice that when I miss taking my supplements, the pain goes away and I overall feel better. Some of my supplements are in gel caps, so I am wondering if the glutamate in them is making me hurt.

I am eating lots of organic veggies, raw salads, organic fruits, raw almonds, fish and occasional chicken. I was recently tested at a naturopathic doctor with one of them "newfangled" machines that tests toxicity, allergies, and everything else. He said my nutrition is good but my minerals were nearly nonexistent.

I am also wondering whether I am getting enough vitamins in my food so that when I take supplements, maybe it's too much and I don't feel as good as when I don't take them. Still a puzzle I'm trying to solve.

Hi Kestra,

Your diet does sound quite similar to mine - however, since I take Coumadin, I am somewhat careful how many salads I include. Raw almond butter and glutenfree bread represent my usual breakfast. And now I am even able to include Salmon (the canned kind) on a regular basis. I am only back on my total supplement regimen for the last 2 weeks. So time will tell, whether I need to make additional changes. What I don't understand, if you are on such a nutritionally oriented diet, why would minerals be nearly nonexistent?

Just as with medication, supplements might also require adjustments, maybe you try a lower dosage and see what happens. I am very careful now, record any change I make and if I experience negative results go back and decide what to do differently.

Good luck - Lisa

Lisa:

I think I have low minerals because I have been drinking distilled water for years, and I've heard it "flushes" minerals out of your system. I am working on finding a mineral water that I can afford and that doesn't taste like crap.

Also, I am in a high-stress profession and have had a couple of extremely stressful years with conflicts with a person at work and also health problems requiring major surgery. Stress depletes minerals in the body.

I'm experimenting with which supplements I can take and which make me feel bad. On the magnesium, I take magnesium glycinate in the Pure Encapsulations brand. But I take it out of the gel caps and take it straight with water, holding it in my mouth for awhile before I swallow to allow some of it to absorb through my mucous membranes.

This experimentation is a long, slow process, and sometimes I don't feel like I'm matching effects to causes exactly, since some foods/supplements take hours and others take days to show an effect. When I look at all the food "no-no's," like dairy products, sometimes I think to myself, "Buy my grandmother ate that and had no problems!" So I suspect it's a combination of all the food additives, soil depletion, environmental pollution and stress that runs us down and not solely what type of food we eat.

Kestra,

we do have a couple of things in common, stress and bottled water. I am working on the stress issue, which I read, can cause all kinds of problems. But never considered bottled water the cause for low minerals.
I will follow your example and try to take my vitamins out of the gel caps. My allergic reaction shows in my face, I will get skin erruptions around my mouth and chin area, it takes almost 1 week to show and another week to clear up, and only vitamins in gel caps seem to cause them.
Trying to find what helps and what hurts is a very complex process. I gave up dairy products too, however, I might reintroduce yoghurt, which never had caused a problem.
