Tests for minerals etc
October 27, 2003 08:42PM
Hi guys
I am following all the discussion about copper, molybdenum etc. with great interest. Most of it is over my head which brings me to the question of what tests should one have if one is going down the dietary path in treating afib?
Are there "standard tests" that all afibbers should have? eg. hair mineral test, blood test and if so what should one be tested for?
I'm slightly confused here so any info about which and what tests I need to have would be appreciated.
Regards
Dean

Hi Dean,

I had a lot of testings done, but I'll give you a summary of which ones I have found most helpful.

All the following were done by Great Smokies Diagnostic Labs. For further reading, go to: www.gsdl.com

Amino Acid Analysis (Plasma)
Metabolic Analysis Profile - tells you how your Kreb's cycle is working and if anything is lacking. In my case I was extremely low in folic acid and Vit. B12.
Elemental Analysis (Packed Erythrocytes) I was very low in molybdenum which is important for several enzymes that clear toxic elements from the body. This also measures several toxic elements along with minerals in the cell.
Comprehensive Vitamin Profile of 17 vitamins.
A normal serum test, to measure extracellular levels of nutrients, which I need to do.

I had other tests done, but have found the first three to be the ones I refer to most. You could try to find a doctor who uses this lab, as it has a good reputation. If you go to their website, there is much to read, so you can make up your own mind.

I hope this helped.

Many thanks Richard!
This is exactly what I was after. Going to see my EP on Friday so will discuss these tests with him and will mention Mg, Cu, Mo etc...... be very interesting to see his response. Probably throw me out of the surgery!

Dean,

Your EP would have probably already done a serum analysis, but he/she won't have a clue about the other tests, at least odds are against it, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

You have to go to a doctor who believes and understands the other testings.

Dean - in past forum discussions, much has been mentioned about testing for minerals such as magnesium, calcium etc. Serum levels of these minerals are worthless to check since the majority of the minerals are intracellular - inside the cells. Push for that type of testing or the other will be a waste and inconclusive. Jackie

Would someone care to rate the tests in order of importance? like

EASY TO GET

blood tests

Lipid profile

serum electrolites

ferritin , c reactive protien , cysteine

HARDER TO GET

Intracellular tests for electrolites harder

Hair samples for other mineral analysis

Amino acid tests

etcetera
