Ablation over with finally!!!!
October 27, 2003 06:05PM
Well i guess I can provide you'll with a day by day of what happened.

Oct. 22. Arrived at Roper Hospital at 7:00 am and after the usual admitting was put in my room on the same floor as I was told the "procedure" would be done. Had to strip down and put on the horrible gowns, "the ones the show your butt". Well after I had lost all sense of dignity a nurse assist. asked me if I had shaved my groin area. Well I had shaved myself completed the night before and I just proudly pulled up my gown and announced shaved myself. She immediately turned her head and stated you only needed to shave up both legs and close to the groin, not all. (Well that got some chuckles from me and my wife.) Anyway, shortly after that i was whisked away in my bed to the "procedure room" and met the team and the Doctor (Stites). Whom I will give info. later on! It was at that time I noticed the catheter which had been placed across my stomach and
they announced she would be giving me some Versed, (It basically puts you in la la land). I announced NO ONE TOLD ME ABOUT THIS! and I grabbed the catheter and bit down on it,. (Well thats the last I remember of the pre-procedure). I was told later they just increased the meds and I gave it up with no problems. I did find a scratch on my face after the procedure, HHMmmmmm. I arrived back in my room about 5:30 pm. My wife said I looked pitiful. My memory is fague on that. I found out I had six holes in my legs all in the femoral left and right and that the doctor had burned me 79 times, in all four pulmonary veins. He stated on one occasion I was in AF and when the burn was completed the AF stopped, which he stated was very exciting. (I was deeply sedated during the whole procedure.)

I was told I could not move for 8 hours and they would remove the tubes in me after 4 hours. Well the tubes were removed I was in a fair amount of discomfort and two nurses put their fingers on the spot the two main tubes were located and pushed very hard for about 10 min. (By the way the catheter was removed about an hour after the first Ouch. They said they were sealing the wounds. (OUCH). Well after that I was told to not move for another 8 hours and was on my back which was killing me, my chest hurt, not too bad, could not take a deep breath either. Anyway, the Doc talked to me and the fam. for quite awhile and felt the procedure was a success. One problem I developed later on, about 3 hours after the big push was I coughed very hard, felt a warm feeling between my legs. I rang the bell and they announced I had blown the seals and the whole push on the wounds (ouch) began again.

Oct. 23. I awakened from a bad night, short naps, like 30 min. and in the morning I got up made a short walk, some discomfort and went into AF about 11:00 am. Well the doctor started me on Flecanide immediately. After about 9 hours of AF I converted back. The Doc. said to not be alarmed, but of course this extended me to another night in the hospital. They gave me restoril to help me sleep the second night.

Oct. 24 & 25. Awakened with high hopes of going home. Normal sinus rhythm was the sound in my ears that morning. He sent me to have x rays, contrast cat scan and an echo of my heart. Well after that I went back into what I thought was AF, but he said no. I was having what appeared to be 120 to 130 beats per minute. (He said in was flutter), along with these 3 to 4 second pauses in my heart beat. He seemed very concerned. I told him I have had these for years, he said well hearing about it from you and seeing it on the screen were two different things. Drugs were increased. Topral was added along with cardizem, but no change this continued into the next day and no change. Well the Doc was spending about 3 to 4 hours with me during these two days and stated we were in this together to fix. Gave me lots of words of encouragement. One time he came by the room smiling, walked over roughed up my hair laughed and walked out never saying a word. (I really began to grow strongly in my respect for him. He stated he felt after the heart healed and got over the shock it would calm down.

Oct. 26. (Sunday). No change in the beats but the pauses stopped, which made the Doc very happy. Meds back to pre procedure level, anxiety of me at an all time high. Doc walks in smiling and says I had an epiphany., while taking my shower. He said that was where he does his best thinking. My sister said glad it was not when you were on the toilet. Well he stated he would continue on the meds one more day and see if any change. Wanted to go very slowly on this and see. I was comfortable not bad at all. Anyway, he wanted to try and slow my heart down so he could look at the strips and see what the beats were doing. I was administered some drug Cardia I think and my rate dropped to 95 for about one min. He got a strip of my rate was looking and announced if no change by 9:00 am he would shock me and was also thinking about going back in and do some more burning this time in the right atrial. This depressed the heck out of me.

Oct. 27. Monday Well at about 4:00 am I converted to NSR. Glory! Glory!.
He was there early and of course announced he thought this would finally happen and asked how I was feeling. I said wonderful and he said good enough to go home. (You know the answer).

Ending: I will report weekly to let you'all know how I am going. Some words from me to you (Thanks for the prayers, my 78 yoa mother in law called me everyday and said she had been praying so much for me her knees were hurting her. She also had many others as my wife did in prayer for my healing of this condition. Everyone's words of encouragement took me to a level of confidence that God would heal me "in his time, not mine."

Hope this was not to long and boring.

What a story, JR. I'm glad it all worked out and you finally went back to NSR. I wish you the very best, and hope you can get off the meds, and stay in NSR. 79 times, you say. Wow.
