We do get taurine from food like fish, meat, eggs.

If you are taking taurine in large doses, you may see some side effects such as short term memory loss. You can also have ulcer trouble because taurine stimulates your stomach acid. There are some people who have intense itching and even psoriasis in doses of 2g a day or higher. Those who have epilepsy may experience dizziness, gait trouble, nausea and headaches.

I guess if you are going to take the supplement, don't take a large dose. I got the above from Dr. Google.

Thanks, Liz. Good cautions, I expect. I know in past years there's been extensive discussion on this forum about the importance of taurine, along with magnesium and potassium, in maintaining heart rhythm. That's why I posted the article.

Hi Lance - thanks for this. I've been taking taurine for a long time and feel that it helps contribute to my overall good health - in general; and especially for eye health as I have macular degeneration (ARMD) that has been stable for a long time thanks to my retinal specialist and his recommendation for a variety of supportive nutrients.

Reminder to new readers: There is a report in the Resources section titled "What About Taurine?" that lists a large range of benefits from Taurine as noted by the referenced physicians who found it helpful.

I've taken 2-4g/day of taurine for 15+ years without any side effects. When I first developed the magnesium/potassium/taurine protocol to keep my afib in remission, I didn't bother to replace my taurine supply when it ran out. I was still working out my plan. I'd had around 4 months of no afib (this is after a 2.5 month episode in the first 4 months of afib). I then had two episodes, about a month apart. When I analyzed what I was doing differently, I realized I'd quit taking the taurine. I added it back in and had a 26 month run of no afib. Then I decided I was "cured" and quit all my supplements. The 26 month afib free run ended in either 24 or 48 hours. Don't recall which, now, but it was quick. It was an experiment I didn't repeat.

Mice are also great sources of taurine.
