n July of 2004 Christopher Bryson sat down and discussed the findings of his new book, The Fluoride Deception, with Paul Connett of the Fluoride Action Network. The book is based on nearly ten years of research by Bryson, an award winning journalist and former producer at the BBC. In this interview we asked Bryson to introduce us to some of the important individuals and institutions which have played a role in shaping public policy on the toxicity of fluoride and the purported safety of the controversial water fluoridation program.

Paul Connett: The Centers for Disease Control says that water fluoridation is one of the top 10 public health achievements of the 20th Century. How can citizens deal with something like that??
Bryson: Question authority! You know, for years and years and years the public health establishment told us that lead in gasoline was safe. We know today that children’s brains were damaged, were injured by the addition of lead to gasoline. The implications of this new documentary evidence, the implications of these buried medical studies which are now in the public domain as a result of my book, as a result of medical work that’s been done by people like Phyllis Mullenix*, the willingness to speak truth by toxicologists like William Marcus** – these are patiens of that research, these new findings that something is terribly, terribly wrong, that we have been led very far astray and it’s time to change, but that change will only come when as a result of bravery, as a result of willingness to invest time. I think it’s time to speak up, to speak loudly, to get organized and fight for change.

EPA ordered to reinstate Montgomery scientist
Secretary of Labor Robert Reich has ordered the reinstatement of a Montgomery County Scientist who was fired by the Environmental Protection Agency after he opposed the use of fluoride in drinking water. Dr. William Marcus was awarded back pay for his $87,000 per year job as a senior toxicologist, $50,000 for hardship and other compensation under Mr. Reich’s order, issued Monday. Mr. Reich ratified a Dec. 3, 1992, ruling by administrative law judge, David Clarke that the EPA “retaliated” against Dr. Marcus by firing him in May 1992 for his scientific reports which recommended removing fluoride from drinking water.
Fluoride, Dr. Marcus said in an interview Friday, is "a poison" found to cause liver cancer and other health problems. It also causes lead to leach from plumbing into water supplies, he said. Dr. Marcus, an EPA scientist for 18 years until he was fired, was protected under federal “whistleblower” laws designed to safeguard employees who report damaging facts about their employer, Mr. Reich said.
