There's a lot of discussion in the literature about the importance of the omega-6
mega-3 ratio. I hadn't seen an explanation of why the ratio was important until recently when a I came across the following at [
chriskresser.com]
"Omega-6 competes with omega-3, and vice versa
As you may recall from the last article, n-6 and n-3 fatty acids compete for the same conversion enzymes. This means that the quantity of n-6 in the diet directly affects the conversion of n-3 ALA, found in plant foods, to long-chain n-3 EPA and DHA, which protect us from disease."
So the competition only effects the conversion ALA into EPA and DHA. Consequently if you get your EPA & DHA directly from seafood sources (which is what most of us rely on) you need not worry too much about not getting much benefit from the ALA in your diet.
