I am on Eliquis and started taking 500mg taurine daily as its good for the heart (am on plant based diet).Just read that it can cause bloodthinning and shouldn't be taken with Eliquis.Any truth to this?

Hi George,

Thank you for sharing your journey. It is fascinating how you used PAC counts as a metric to dial in your supplement stack and how crucial taurine became in keeping you in normal rhythm for years.

Could you share what specific daily dosage of taurine you found most effective for yourself?

I am asking because I also have an incredibly strong response to taurine. If I take about 5 grams during an active afib episode, I can reliably convert back to normal rhythm within 30 to 60 minutes. Without the taurine, my episodes usually drag on for up to 20 hours.

The problem is that I cannot take it regularly as a daily preventative. The taurine triggers an unbelievable amount of sulfur gas (smelling like rotten eggs) that lasts for a good 15 hours. My gut bacteria seem to heavily ferment the sulfur in the taurine, so I can only use it as a "pill in the pocket" approach.

Did you ever experience any digestive issues with your daily dosage, and how did you spread your intake throughout the day?

Quote
Yuxi
Are you taking a taurine supplement? Has it helped you maintain your heart rhythm?

I take taurine as a powder for supplement. My supplement stack was initially (starting in Dec 2004) magnesium, potassium & taurine (and these remain primary). I had my initial afib episode in early July 2004. I was having episodes every 10-14 days and I could convert theim with exercise. I also found a paper on Scandanavian orienteers that indicated an increased afib risk for those who were chronically fit (and I thought I fit that profile). Around the beginning of September I had an episode that did not converte and lasted 2.5 months. I converted it with a loading dose of flecainide (took 20 hours to convert the long episode). Before I converted the episode, my EP suggested I stay out of rhythm as my afib heart rate was under 100 BPM. I declined and proposed a plan "B" that included changing my training along with electrolyte and taurrine supplements as well as a script for on-demand flec. He agreed.

I had to figure out how to dose everything and decided to use PAC/hour counts as a metric. Using an RR (beat to beat) recording monitor, I wouild monitor these counts either during sleep and also during medidation (primarily during meditation as I'd get artifacts in the data during sleep, from movement). My objective was to dose such to minimize counts. A month or so after converting the 2.5 month episode, I had another episode. This also took 20 hours to convert. I think the atria were still "stunned" from the long episode. Then I went 4 months without an episode and was also playing with dosing. I then had an episdoe that I unitentionally provoked. I lead a group of Scouts on a snow caving outing. I had a 70# pack and was breaking trail in 3' of snow. Then I contstructed a 3 person snow cave. The two other occupants - one a Scout and one an older leader - helped very little. I had a vagal episdode at 11PM in the cave & converted it quickly (under an hour) with flec (washing the flec down with water from my half frozen water bottle). A month later had another episode without obvious provocation. I asked myself what was different? I realized I'd run out of taurine maybe 6 weeks before and not replaced it as I didn't think it was doing anything. I put it back in the stack and went two years without an episode. The next episode happened as I thought I was "cured" and quit all my supplements. Had afib within 48 hours. I did not repeat that experiment. Taurine has been a constant in my stack since.

There have been some studies that suggest taurine could increase bleed risk, but the evidence isn't strong and most sources say it's not a problem. If there is any interaction, I think it's probably very weak. Personally, I'd be fine with combining them.
