How long should someone remain on BID heparin shots?

I was diagnosed three weeks ago with my second DVT. I had to stop eliquis and start shooting myself with daily shots of heparin.
Ultrasound yesterday confirmed the 2cm clot is gone. I was supposed to had seen my hematologist Monday but it was postponed until the16th because he wanted two CTs with contrast, two ultrasounds , exotic bloodwork and both a colonoscopy and endoscopy. All are done except for the GI scopes so my dr appointment was postponed until the 16th.

The plan is, if all tests are normal, to double up to 5mg BID eliquis for life and stop the shots.

I don’t think heparin dosage is meant for long term. It really hurts and I’m getting hematomas after each shot.

I feel it’s overkill to keep shooting myself up until I see him since the clot is gone..although the area is still painful. I’m doing a bad job administering it. Today I dropped the syringe so I tossed it and the second one popped out and I had to reinsert in a different area worried I gave myself blood poisoning injecting myself with a dirty needle. So i am running out of non red/purple areas to jab. Plus it’s so expensive.

Thanks Carey. Big ramifications if I play doctor.

I’m trying to get his email so I can ask him. I just refilled 7 days in hope he gets my messages that I randomly am sending to the hematology department’s list of emails at the hospital’s directory.

I’m getting a colonoscopy in 8 days so I need to wean off anyway but no instructions were given.

Time for my shot…

Your question is above my pay grade and I suspect everyone else's pay grade as well. It makes sense to me to go back to full-dose Eliquis now that the clot is gone, but I'm not going to offer that opinion on a question with such big ramifications. I think the hematologist is the only one who should be answering it.
