Thanks Joe - this helps highlight the fact that lifestyle plays a huge role in managing AFIB. That is not to say that all cases are the result of poor choices, but many are with excess weight and poor diet being the primary culprits. Even when I was a triathlete in my 40’s I was at least 20lbs overweight, and I have added 10 more since. My goal is to lose this excess weight before ever considering surgery. That said - losing weight is really hard. Much harder than pushing yourself up a never ending hill, or a 4 hr bike ride. One of the best articles I ever read on the topic of AF was Dr John Mandrola’s 2014 piece entitled ‘AFIB is your body talking to you’. I recommend reading it.

p.s. I should add that I consider my prior love of intense and prolonged endurance exercise to be the primary cause of my AFIB. Now that I have it, adopting a healthier lifestyle should be the focus of how I manage it.
