Atrial Fibrillation Patient Conference
May 17, 2018 10:35PM
A conference for those of us who have atrial fibrillation will be held in at the Fairmont Hotel in Dallas, Texas on August 3-5, 2018. The conference is sponsored by the American Heart Association, StopAfib.Org., and My A-fib Experience (a support forum of the American Heart Association). Experts in the field of electrophysiology will be presenting the programs and answering questions from those attending.
The name of the conference is GET IN RHYTHM, STAY IN RHYTHM.
Some of the topics to be on the agenda are:
Risk factors that can cause afib
Questions to ask your doctor and which specialists to consider meeting with
How a-fib is treated with medications, and which procedures are available if medications don't work
Lifestyle changes you can make to decrease your a-fib burden
How to work effectively with your doctors
What the future holds in terms of research
The attendance for this forum is filling fast so if you are interested you can find more information at StopAfib.org.
Enrollment information should be available there also.
Those a-fib patients who have attended the previous years' conferences have come away with a better understanding about a-fib and encouragement in handling it.

Doesn't sound like they're proposing ablation as a first line treatment option.

I don't think they're proposing or opposing anything. StopAfib.org is a widely respected patient advocacy organization.

I see...they include a management model for asymptomatic patients:

"Some clinical trials have suggested that it's less important than originally thought to get afib patients into normal sinus rhythm.
" Control heart rate and anticoagulate, and if there are no symptoms and the heart rate is controlled, then leave the patient in afib."

StopAFib.org is not proposing or opposing any particular treatment options and recognizes that these issues are to be determined by an individual's electrophysiologist and that individual's particular set of circumstances with A-fib. In some instances ablation is recommended as a first line of treatment as there have been some studies that indicate that having an ablation "sooner" rather than "later" can have a greater chance of success. Many patients and their doctors prefer to try the medicine approach first. A-fib affects each individual differently and the recommended treatment will vary as well. Treatment decisions may also depend on the patient's other health issues. This Patient Conference will be examining and explaining the number of options that are available for treating a-fib. The statement that jPeteres quotes in his post is just one opinion for asymptomatic patients and is not intended to be a recommendation for all asymptomatic patients. The StopAFib Organization is a well known and respected Advocacy for A-Fib Patients as Carey suggested.
Wishing NSR for all.....
