Can anything be done ref unnoticeable pulse rate variation
March 28, 2017 07:02PM
Gentlefolk,

My pulse rate variation can only be noticed when checking my pulse or on an ECG.

I don't notice it when exercising or in fact at any time apart from checking my pulse which is normally around 60.

The only medication I am on for anything is half dose Eliquis 2x 2.5 a day.

I am a healthy slim 82-year-old.

I would very much appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks

Alex

are you saying the pulse rate variation equates with being in AFIB?

and are you asking what can be done to get out of AFIB?

Alex,

As I recall you are in afib all the time, correct?

Not sure what you are getting at. Are you saying your pulse doesn't increase when you exercise?

Just guessing here but I think he is saying he doesn't feel his AFIB
at rest and not even at a higher HR when exercising. Just not sure
what suggestion he is after. Isn't it rare to be in AFIB all the time
and have such a low HR without being on any rate control drug?
And is a 1/2 dose of eliquis while in AFIB really a good idea?
Maybe you had a previous GI bleed? Maybe a left atrial appendage
discussion with his cardiologist is in order.

Your AFIB is probably less noticeable compared to others since your rate is so low. That is very good. Good that you don't need rate control drugs like most of us.

If you are indeed asking about a lack of sensation or palpitations with your AFIB, another possibilty is a weakened Heart muscle. Have you had an Echo recently? I had AF that went untreated for 3 years and resulted in Tachy-cardia induced Cardio-Myopathy. In my case my AFIB HR was too high (80-110). As my Heart got weaker, I felt the AFIB less and less. Now that my Heart is back to normal, I really feel the AFIB episodes at first, but after utilizing my rate control Meds, my symptoms almost unnoticeable. My AFIB symptoms correspond to how close I can lower my AFIB HR down to where my Baseline NSR HR, which is about 60-65.

Thanks gentlemen,

My heart rate goes from about 60 to about 80 when lifting heavy weights. I don't notice anything.

My cardiologist says after reviewing my tests[which I have available but which I'm not competent to comment on] that half dose Eliquis was the suggestion.

There is always some level of variation in pulse rate but at some point it gets into the atrial fibrillation category.

My dream would be not to have the level of variation and move out of the atrial fibrillation category.

I have all my recent tests in one email but I don't want to go cardiologist shopping if it can be avoided.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Alex,

My experience is that in NSR, variability in heart rate - from one beat to the next - is something in the range of 0-4 BPM. In my afib beat to beat variability can range from 10-35 and the variability is variable from one beat to the next.

An Kardia (AliveCor) device for your smartphone might be useful. On the ECG, a lack of a "p" wave can be diagnostic. The p wave is little bump before the QRS complex.

See here (from a Lead I Presentation) - held with one contact in each hand

and here (from a Lead II Presentation) - touching left knee and held with the right hand

From <[www.richardbogle.com]

You can see the p wave is much more pronounced in Lead II.

The variability will show up in the distance between the "R" peaks

These guys sell in Australia <[www.alivetec.com]

Hello George,

I always respect your level of knowledge.

My question is if get a Kardia what can I beneficially do with the new additional knowledge that will improve / reduce the pulse rate variation or can result in any other improvement ?

Thanks

Addressed to George N though any help would be appreciated.

I havent got the depth of knowledge as do you to interpret the results.

I have detailed heart information and data from my cardiologist.

If I sent this to you would you care to comment ?

No responsibility on your side for comments or opinions.

Thanks
