Sleep Aid

Sleep Aid

For years I took 1/2 Triazolam to sleep. I have eliminated all prescriptions including HRT, with the exception of temporary Clopidegrel (sp). - Plavix- post Watchman. I just decided to “re-learn” how to sleep naturally. I was doing well until I quit the HRT. I do not want to back on that just for sleep.

Two day ago I got 10mg time-released Melatonin and took one 30 minutes before bed. I slept better but was “hung over” all day yesterday so did not take it last night.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Maybe just a lower dose Melatonin — or any other natural remedies? Thank you.

The "hung over" feeling is a typical mild overdose symptom for melatonin. Try 5 mg 30 minutes before bedtime.

I use 10 mg melatonin every night without side affects. Except a good nights sleep.

I got 5mg Melatonin and used it one night. Im glad I have it and wasn’t too hung over; but for whatever reason since I’ve been sleeping okay without it.

Try the non time released Melatonin, maybe <3 mg when you go to bed or at your first wakeful period.
PharmaGaba chewables work pretty well for getting me back to sleep after a wakeful period.

Friends,

I had a chat with a sleep specialist MD a few weeks back. She said that the idea that it was perfectly OK to take melatonin, 10 mg or more if needed, on a long term basis. I've heard before on this list that taking melatonin on a long term basis was not a good idea.

Anyone familiar with the current/best thinking on this?

Thanks!

There was an Italian study done perhaps 8 years ago that found 20 mg or Melatonin/day was beneficial for breast cancer survivor.

My wife took that for a couple of months and had too many intense nightmares and almost anti-sleep.

WebMD has a treatise on Melatonin use that seems pretty inconclusive to me.

My doctor said based on a study he was familiar with. 10 mg melatonin was preferred for long term use as a sleep aid.

There's a thread on this forum from back in 2014 that provides an extensive discussion of melatonin and melatonin dosage and physiology, with excellent input from Jackie and Shannon. Worth a look.
