Great Anti-Fib, thank you. Gary Null sure is a potent activist against corruption in all things harmful, even deadly as in

Gary Hull has been at the forefront of uncovering some of the worse practices amoung Big Pharma and their strong influence on medical education and FDA policy... There are signs of a shift starting to happen with increased awareness mint physicians in many specialties, but there is a lot of inertia and the huge financial influence to maintain status quo will likely still take a many years to turn the tide.

As good as Null's analysis is, I heard a very insightful evaluation of some of the stats used by Null and other main the natural field too indicating when discussing how many people are killed by modern medicine ( a significant number and far higher than it should be ... Nonetheless those stats were skewed too by not accounting fur those who would have died anyway of the underlying disease/injury.

His point is still valid and well taken, that for too deaths and injuries still occur in hospitals and after procedures, especially by undertrained physicians and hospitals, but that the numbers and analogy to a certain number of 747 jets crashing per day was itself exaggerated by the inclusion of many who were not going to make it regardless of errors or not under medical care.

It's a rather fine point of distinction and does not undermine Gary Null's main thesis, but just underscores the reality that numbers can be stretched by both sides of the fence, even when inadvertently and innocently enough as they seem to have been in his case.

Bottomline even recent research indicates that medical error are the 3rd leading cause of death in the US. A way too high percentage and highlights that when hospital procedures are needed, it ALWAYS makes good sense to make a real effort to find and choose the most respected and experienced operators and hospitals with the best track record fir success and low complications for whatever speciality you might need their help. A tremendous number of people are also saved by skillfully applied modern medicine too when it's really called for.

It's a careful balance required to minimize risk and increase odds of success, and especially when you have the luxury of time on your side, I feel it's usually wise to try everything you can to help manage the condition naturally via functional medicine .. Alas this is a specialty that tends to work best as an ongoing education and life style changes for the better rather than getting serious only after the whereas have come off the wagon in which your options are often much more limited via integrative/functional routes alone.

We should be teaching this more common sense 'self-health' care starting in grade school if we are going to really turn around our far to expensive and spotty health care system.

Gary Null has been a pioneer in sorting out what's wrong with parts of the system. I would love to see more real world solutions suggested and adopted too. These things take time, but Skways start first with growing awareness of the issue and scale of its impact.

Hi Shannon,

When the study Death by Medicine was reported to the world by Life Extension Magazine in August of 2006 (I subscribed at the time) I wasn't sure I could believe it so I scrutinized it carefully looking for flaws. Dense as it is this was not a casual task. My conclusion? - there are no flaws.

LE's description of the study are the first 3 pages of the PDF [tbmseminars.com]

From p. 1:

Life Extension has decided to publish this article in its entirety to call attention to the failure of the American medical system. By exposing these gruesome statistics in painstaking detail, we provide a basis for competent and compassionate medical professionals to recognize the inadequacies of today’s system and at least attempt to institute meaningful reforms. Natural medicine is under siege, as pharmaceutical company lobbyists urge lawmakers to deprive Americans of the benefits of dietary supplements and bioidentical hormones. Drug-company front groups have launched slanderous media campaigns to discredit the value of healthy lifestyles. The FDA continues to interfere with those who offer natural products that compete with prescription drugs. These attacks against natural medicine obscure a lethal problem that until now was buried in thousands of pages of scientific text. In response to these baseless challenges to natural medicine, the Nutrition Institute of America commissioned an independent review of the quality of “government-approved” medicine. The startling findings from this meticulous study indicate that conventional medicine is the leading cause of death in the United States. The Nutrition Institute of America is a nonprofit organization that has sponsored independent research for the past 30 years. To support its bold claim that conventional medicine is America’s number-one killer, the Institute mandated that every “count” in this “indictment” of US medicine be validated by published, peer-reviewed scientific studies. What you are about to read is a stunning compilation of facts that documents that those who seek to abolish consumer access to natural therapies are misleading the public. Nearly 800,000 Americans die each year at the hands of government-sanctioned medicine, while the FDA and other government agencies pretend to protect the public by harassing those who offer safe alternatives.

This summarizing statement on p. 2 says it all:

As shown in Table 1, the estimated total number of iatrogenic deaths—that is, deaths induced inadvertently by a physician or surgeon or by medical treatment or diagnostic procedures—in the US annually is 783,936. It is evident that the American medical system is itself the leading cause of death and injury in the US. By comparison, approximately 699,697 Americans died of heart disease in 2001, while 553,251 died of cancer.
========

783,936 deaths per year/ 365 days per year = 2,148 deaths per day, equivalent to the passenger capacity of six 747-100 jumbo jets.

From The Daily Dose newsletter by Jack Harrison May 11, 2016

The Killer health hazard you need to know

I’m sure you’ve heard a million times that the nation’s leading cause of death is heart disease, and number two on the list is all forms of cancer combined.

But I’ll bet you’ll never guess #3.

It’s a common health hazard your doc will never warn you of… one that has no ribbons or awareness campaigns… and one the CDC itself doesn’t even track as its own category.

It’s MEDICAL MISTAKES!

No one ever gets “DOCTOR ERROR” listed on a death certificate, so the CDC has no stats on them — at least in part because docs won’t even own up to them.

So investigators from the world-famous Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine did what the CDC has failed to do: They’ve combed through the records to find the REAL causes of death.

They found that medical mistakes kill more than a quarter of a million Americans every year.

That’s nearly 1 in 10 of all deaths.

We’re being killed by our supposed care!

That means medical mistakes — just in cases of inpatient hospitalizations alone — now kill more Americans than any single form of cancer. Heck, they kill more Americans than lung, breast, and prostate cancers combined.

These errors are responsible for nearly twice as many deaths as stroke…nearly triple the deaths from Alzheimer’s…and more than four times the death toll from flu and pneumonia.

And those traffic accidents that people are always gawking at? Those kill 33,000 people annually — and the numbers have been dropping every year.

Medical mistakes, on the other hand, seem to be getting worse — and even the ones that won’t KILL you could leave you disabled or disfigured.

These numbers come as a huge shock to the mainstream, but they’ve been hiding in plain sight all along.

A 2011 study you read about right here in the Daily Dose found that up to 1 in 3 hospital patients are the victim of at least some form of screw-up. That’s TEN times as many errors as are officially reported!

Like I said, docs hate admitting this stuff.

You might think there’s nothing you can do about it… that when you’re wheeled into the hospital, you’re pretty much taking a spin on the roulette wheel of death.

But there IS something you can do.

Start by warning your spouse and your friends, because odds are one of you… and likely ALL of you… will be in a hospital at some point.

Then, make a deal: When one of you goes in, everyone else takes turns watching, like a nest of angry hawks. We know from earlier studies that the most common mistakes are related to meds, including wrong meds and overdoses of meds, so question absolute every drug brought into the room.

But it’s not just meds, and it’s not just doctors, either. Every single person on staff at a hospital who’s attending to your care while you’re there could make a mistake…whether it’s giving you an invasive test that you don’t actually need…or using a dirty scope that infects you with an antibiotic-resistant superbug.

Make them double- and triple-check if you have to — because, as the new study shows, this is literally a life-or-death situation.
